About book
Menstruation is an often-ignored taboo subject, reflecting a stigma on the body and its natural processes. And yet, this is something women carry with them from the first drops of menstrual blood on their underwear and up until... Until they dare to say out loud, “I am a woman, and it feels good to be me, it is wonderful, interesting, inspiring, sometimes funny, sometimes not so great, but it feels absolutely normal!” To have periods, to talk about them, not to be embarrassed — it is all normal.
Calling it ‘special days’, ‘period’ or ‘menstruation’ is all natural and not shameful. Menstruation stigma, lack of knowledge and shame and superstition poison women’s lives, negatively affect their health, multiplying fears and self-doubt. It is time we got rid of the shame — a woman is a woman, and blood is blood. Periods are not an illness. Periods are not a disgraceful stigma. Periods are normal! Women can mark days in their period calendar with a cross, but this cross should not become a heavy burden women around the world have to carry on their shoulders.
Idea
The topic of mentation is surrounded by mystification, as is the topic of childbirth. Also, the Ukrainian version of the book has a subtitle that is literally translated: "A very bloody book". The book's pre-order launch was scheduled for Halloween, so we decided to use images of witches in our communication to ironize the taboo in society. The photo shoot was attended by the publishing team and the author of the book, Olga Kari.
There is also still a taboo in Ukraine to show feminine hygiene products as they are, to show blood. We did all this for this project to provoke a discussion in society, and we succeeded.
